Immigrant Voicethread Project
English 11

Date Assigned : Monday, October 24
Date Due : Thursday, November 3
Points Possible : 80 points

For the next major unit assessment, you will use Voicethread, a collaborative multi-media slide show that allows you to share documents, images, and video.
In your Voicethread, you will answer our essential question on a more personal level:Why do people leave what is unfamiliar and known for the unknown?

Your primary topic to explore in your Voicethread is :
  • Looking into your past, determine why someone important to you left what was familiar and known for the unknown.

This could be the story of (1) how your family came to America. It could also be a story explaining (2) why your family moved from one location to another either in the distant past or more recently. You could also (3) interview someone else in your family, neighborhood, or anyone close to you and tell the story of why they left what was familiar and known for the unknown.

Your Voicethread needs to contain the following information/media somewhere in the slides.
  • A historical overview of the time period that your personal immigration story comes from
  • The “push” and/or “pull” factors at work in your story
  • A clear story explaining the following:
    • Who the featured family member(s) were/are (images, descriptions)
    • The “knowns” that your family member was leaving (place, occupation, family)
    • The “unknowns” that your family member was headed towards (place, occupation, family, opportunity)
    • The risks involved in making the trip or making the transition
    • The outcome of taking the risk: What was gained, what was lost?
  • An Interview with a family member, neighbor, or person of interest whose story you are telling. This interview does not have to be with the actual person migrating. For example - if you are telling the story of a grandparent who has passed away, you might interview your parent who is talking about your grandparent.
Other slides could contain things like
  • Family portraits and artifacts
  • Genealogy trees
  • Additional interviews besides the required one
  • Music, other audio that is relevant to your story

Remember that Voicethread is an interactive and collaborative tool; your steps in this project should look something like this:
1) Gather the pieces for your slides – i.e. scan images, find images online, create PowerPoint slides with text, create video and audio files.
2) Logon to Voicethread and familiarize/ re-familiarize yourself with the tools in the program.
3) Upload your images, video files, and text files into Voicethread and arrange them into the order you desire.
4) Add voice and text comments to narrate your project. This should be the bulk of how your personal immigration story is told. Use your slides for more visual images, important text, and video, but tell the story with your voice and through the voices of your family in your interviews.
